A Unique Community Center Experience | www.UnityHallWV.org

"Kudos to those behind pumping life back into Unity Hall. The importance of their success is a vital cog for our future.  And the involvement and support of our community for Unity Hall will lead to better people and better things for Beckley." -11/2/2011-Register-Herald.

On average 6,000 students drop out of West Virginia schools each year, and 80% of those dropouts are expected to eventually end up in prison.  In 2009 16% of children under the age of 18 in Raleigh County dropped out of school.  The lifetime cost to the nation for each youth who drops out of school and later moves into a life of crime and drugs ranges from $1.7 to $2.3 million dollars.

UHCC seeks to combat this problem by utilizing technology and digital media arts as a vehicle to promote learning and social change.  Programs are targeted, but not limited to youth ages 15 – 21, and utilize a multitude of approaches that take an “assets,” rather than a “deficit” approach to enabling teens and young adults to be actively involved in their own development.

Social Services

Life skills enable individuals to deal with drug abuse, alcoholism, as well as mental illness.  Although academics play a vital part in the educational growth of children and teenagers, skills such as how to achieve goals, long-term planning, money management and dealing with stress are just as important.

Artistic & Cultural Expression

UHCC will create opportunities for artistic and cultural expression, promote cooperation with those who serve the public interest and facilitate open, unbiased communication through public access to media.

Civic Engagement

The Technologies of the 21st century have provided us with enhanced methods to communicate, create and consume media content. UHCC will provide residents and non-profit organizations with access to the training, expertise and tools needed to use digital media to express their varied interests and identities.
